Local Leadership

The MOKAN Chapter of Trout Unlimited is an all-volunteer conservation nonprofit working to care for and recover rivers and streams and the trout that call them home. Working with TU staff and community partners, we bring people together to make our trout and salmon fisheries stronger, our water cleaner and our communities healthier. Join us and be a champion for your rivers and streams.

If you have the interest and time to make a deeper commitment to our local conservation and education work, we’d welcome you on the board or one of our many committees. To get started, connect with a MOKAN board member at one of our monthly gatherings or coming events, or contact us to learn more.

PRESIDENT
Evan Gahan

  • TU Member Since: 2018
  • Reason for Joining TU: A good friend (current treasurer Vance Schneider) bought my membership as a birthday present and I’ve remained involved because of all the great people I’ve met and become friends with through the chapter and of course being able to support and help protect the fisheries that allow me to connect with nature and recharge my soul.
  • Favorite Fish: Westslope Cutthroat Trout; Early in my fly fishing career I was fortunate enough to take a few trips to Montana and the beauty of these fish and the places they lived had me absolutely hooked on the sport.
  • Bucket List Fish/Trip: There’s a lot of incredible trips I’d love to do at some point, but the fish at the top of my list at this moment would be Striped Bass.

VICE PRESIDENT
Doug Hurt

  • TU Member Since: 2023
  • Reason for Joining TU: I was searching for a connection with like-minded people who shared my passion for fly fishing and conservation. While I had long supported Trout Unlimited from a distance, I finally decided it was time to get involved. Joining my local chapter turned out to be exactly what I needed—it brought me into a community of dedicated individuals and filled a gap I hadn’t realized was so important: the camaraderie of good company and the shared drive to protect the waters we love.
  • Favorite Fish:Brown Trout – we are fortunate here at the MoKan Chapter to have the amazing White River tailwaters and its trophy browns within a half day’s drive
  • Bucket List Fish/Trip:Would love to sight fish for some of the trophy trout in New Zealand.

SECRETARY
Gordon Roe

  • TU Member Since: 2020
  • Reason for Joining TU: I was looking for organizations that would assist in bring a speaker to town and the local TU chapter stepped up.  I joined TU at that time and met the nicest group of people.
  • Favorite Fish: Whatever we’re fishing for today, though I really enjoy blue lining, small stream fishing for wild trout. Second to that, I enjoy fishing for large mouth bass in some of the local lakes/ponds we have in the area.
  • Bucket List Fish/Trip: To be retired with unlimited time to fish. (check)

Board Member
James Soukup

  • TU Member Since: 2006
  • Reason for Joining TU: I have been a member when I moved to Minnesota after grad school.  I had stayed a member there helping out with river clean ups and other social events. I stayed a member when I moved to Florida and when I moved to Kansas. I had let my membership lapse when I moved to Kansas as there wasn’t a lock chapter.  I was working at Orvis when there was a meeting to start a local chapter.  Long story short, I was the first chapter president of MoKan TU, served as a National Leadership Council rep, and now a local board member.
  • Favorite Fish: Bluegill.  Found everywhere, but the big ones are something special
  • Bucket List Fish/Trip: mako shark on the fly.  I want to be connected to something truly crazy.

Board Member
Richard Kim

  • TU Member Since: 2023
  • Reason for Joining TU: I rejoined after moving back to the US from abroad as a way to get involved in the local fly fishing community. I had a membership when I was younger, so it was really coming back to the organization. I grew up in the Wisconsin northwoods and conservation was something that was naturally discussed in our family, so it’s always been a passion of mine
  • Favorite Fish: Coaster Brook Trout have become my favorite fish. I caught some growing up and didn’t really know what I was looking at, or how special they were, but I’ve grown a fondness for the Lake Superior natives
  • Bucket List Fish/Trip:I have been to Mongolia in the fall before, but not to fish. I would love to go back one day to chase Taimen
